Combine the legacy of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a museum in the middle of a once-in-a-lifetime transformation, and a team obsessed with storytelling through technology, and what do you get? A campus-wide extended reality ecosystem that turns more than a century of racing into something you don’t just look at—you feel. In under ten months, the museum’s blank walls and open floors became a connected network of interactive media, immersive films, and real-time data visualizations that put visitors inside the story of the Racing Capital of the World.

From the very beginning, the goal wasn’t to drop in a few “wow moments,” but to build a unified media platform. Balance Studios, with it's partners BPI, and Geomedia, and a broader team of designers, fabricators, and contractors worked in parallel to architect the full experience: 23 interactives, over 60 original films, six environmental soundscapes, immersive theater presentations, and a projection-mapped racetrack. Behind the scenes, a custom enterprise CMS ties it all together, giving museum staff the power to update stories, swap content, and keep pace with new victories and milestones long after opening day.

On the floor, that strategy comes to life in experiences that make speed and strategy feel human. Visitors lower themselves into the intensity of race day through large-scale theaters, surround audio, and environmental effects that echo the roar and tension of the Indy 500. Interactive pit stops and gesture-driven exhibits let guests explore the engineering and decision-making behind every lap—touching, swiping, and triggering layered content that reveals how drivers, teams, and technology push the limits of performance. Projection mapping turns a dimensional racetrack into a living canvas, replaying historic moments and showing how tiny choices can change everything.

This transformation goes far beyond a makeover—it's a living, evolving storytelling environment. Die-hard fans dive deeper than ever, newcomers feel instantly welcomed, and families uncover the human stories and engineering breakthroughs behind the roar of the track. Mid-presentation, famous monuments overlay at accurate scale: the Roman Colosseum fits in Turn 1, Yankee Stadium occupies Turn 3, Vatican City appears in the infield—creating instant spatial comprehension of the speedway's massive footprint. When visitors tap integrated touchscreens, the experience transitions to interactive control. Decade buttons (1910s–2020s) along the screen edge enable chronological navigation. Selecting each decade illuminates 24 hotspots across the projected map—some active, some grayed based on whether facilities existed during selected eras. Tapping the Pagoda hotspot in "1920s" reveals the Art Deco structure; switching to "1990s" shows the glass-and-steel replacement.

A persistent pulsing red stripe animation runs continuously across all monitors along the bottom edge, visually connecting zones into unified timeline. Winning years display distinctive visual treatment, victory seasons stand out immediately.

Within each zone, selecting any year updates both monitors simultaneously: left monitor displays race listing and year overview; right monitor shows featured imagery. Selecting any race reveals three content categories via persistent navigation: Race Rewind (competition recap with statistics and imagery), Captain's Comments (Roger Penske's strategic insights), Race Car & Pace Car (winning vehicle technical details).

This three-tab structure accommodates diverse interests, racing fans want competition recaps, business professionals seek Penske's management philosophy, automotive enthusiasts examine specifications. Meet the Teams driver cards appear throughout race detail screens; selecting any driver expands to comprehensive profile showing race-specific statistics (starting position, qualifying speed, finish, laps led, laps completed), car imagery with number/driver/team/specifications, crew member information, and team personnel details. When zones idle, grayscale montage attract videos play showing Team Penske historical imagery, victory celebrations, legendary drivers, championship moments. When a zone activates, attract video blurs but continues playing behind active content, maintaining ambient heritage awareness.
