Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum

Museum

Combine the legacy of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a museum in the middle of a once-in-a-lifetime transformation, and a team obsessed with storytelling through technology, and what do you get? A campus-wide extended reality ecosystem that turns more than a century of racing into something you don’t just look at—you feel. In under ten months, the museum’s blank walls and open floors became a connected network of interactive media, immersive films, and real-time data visualizations that put visitors inside the story of the Racing Capital of the World.

From the very beginning, the goal wasn’t to drop in a few “wow moments,” but to build a unified media platform. Balance Studios, with it's partners BPI, and Geomedia, and a broader team of designers, fabricators, and contractors worked in parallel to architect the full experience: 23 interactives, over 60 original films, six environmental soundscapes, immersive theater presentations, and a projection-mapped racetrack. Behind the scenes, a custom enterprise CMS ties it all together, giving museum staff the power to update stories, swap content, and keep pace with new victories and milestones long after opening day.

On the floor, that strategy comes to life in experiences that make speed and strategy feel human. Visitors lower themselves into the intensity of race day through large-scale theaters, surround audio, and environmental effects that echo the roar and tension of the Indy 500. Interactive pit stops and gesture-driven exhibits let guests explore the engineering and decision-making behind every lap—touching, swiping, and triggering layered content that reveals how drivers, teams, and technology push the limits of performance. Projection mapping turns a dimensional racetrack into a living canvas, replaying historic moments and showing how tiny choices can change everything.

This transformation goes far beyond a makeover—it's a living, evolving storytelling environment. Die-hard fans dive deeper than ever, newcomers feel instantly welcomed, and families uncover the human stories and engineering breakthroughs behind the roar of the track. With flexible experiences designed to grow and adapt, it’s extended reality at scale—celebrating heritage, igniting the present, and gearing up for everything on the horizon.

The Idea

Invite visitors into the living story of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, transforming more than a century of racing into an immersive extended-reality journey.

Use interactive media, cinematic environments, and data-driven experiences to make the speed, strategy, and human drama of Indy racing tangible for everyone—from die-hard fans to first-time visitors—so they feel the roar of race day, understand the innovation behind it, and leave with a deeper connection to the Racing Capital of the World.

Services

Design, build, and operate a museum-wide extended reality ecosystem—from early experience strategy and interactive exhibit design through real-time 3D development, projection mapping, and custom hardware integration.

Our team delivered original films, soundscapes, and data-driven visualizations; engineered gesture-, touch-, and theater-based experiences; and built a centralized enterprise CMS that lets the museum staff update content across all interactives. We handled creative direction, technical architecture, content production, and on-site deployment and training so every element of the exhibit works together as one cohesive, future-proof platform.

The Result

The reimagined museum opened to overwhelming acclaim from press, industry, and visitors alike.

Racing enthusiasts praise the depth of technical detail. Families discover the science and strategy behind speed.

First-time visitors leave as engaged fans. Museum professionals recognize it as a benchmark for immersive experience design.
“Together, Balance, along with their partners, worked alongside Shiel Sexton, the design team, and the museum staff, including a variety of vendors, to deliver a cohesive and compelling world-class visitor experience. The schedule was dictated by specific events and was tight, and the media load was heavy, but everyone brought their A-game. Their shared dedication to quality and storytelling ensured that every element—from interactive pit stops to cinematic race-day moments—came together.”
