Beyond Spaceship Earth

Education | Museum

To highlight the many astronauts with ties to their home state of Indiana, The Children's Museum of Indianapolis (TCM) partnered with Balance Studios, leaders in interactive development applications. Keeping the focus on the astronauts, the creative team developed a colorful and engaging touchscreen that educates and entertains guests before and after they visit the museum.

With an emphasis on the astronauts leading the design, Balance designed a colorful and engaging touchscreen and a matching responsive website. Beyond the biographies and photos, visitors can search through a complex tagging system, discovering how astronauts are connected through their training, missions, and decades. To ensure ADA  compliance, each screen also has an audio file that reads the content to the visitor.

The custom content management system (CMS) delivers a tagging system that allows TCM to match astronauts with information such as years and dates of service, their missions into space, and information about their training and education. Museum administrators can easily update or edit astronaut biography information, and add images and videos. The Hall of Fame was so popular and well-used by patrons that the team had to add another server to accommodate all of the analytics and the many people who were accessing it.

The Idea

Highlight astronauts from their home state of Indiana at an experience at The Children's Museum of Indianapolis.

Services

Out of this world collaboration to showcase local connections, partnering with our museum-partners to make guest experiences fun and relatable is a space we love to explore. And using technology to make human connections and show the people who are the real stars? Well, that's a blast too.

The Result

Visitors love exploring how many astronauts are from Indiana and the museum team loves the CMS to the moon and back.

“Working with Balance Studios has been a pleasure. Their project management is always on top of their game, and they ensure that no small tasks fall through the cracks. The development team has also been accommodating in helping us implement new project features and design elements that pop up. The multiple projects we’ve worked on together have been vastly different, and quite complex, over the last few years, but all were successful and high quality end products.”
