HSHS St. Vincent Hospital
Interactive Video Wall & Entry Kiosk

Healthcare

Hospitals can be a scary place for a sick child. Over the last several years, Green Bay’s St. Vincent Hospital has undertaken a series of major renovations to their 10th floor pediatric unit. In addition to technical improvements designed to provide the highest level of care to their young patients, the hospital has upgraded the overall visitor experience in the pediatric unit to provide kids a more healing environment where they can feel more at home and find comfort for themselves and their families.

Camera Corner Connecting Point (CCCP), a Green Bay, Wisconsin technology solutions provider working with St. Vincent needed a digital media partner to develop two engaging experiences for visitors to the facility. CCCP commissioned Balance Digital Media Studios to develop an interactive video wall and an entry kiosk welcome video for the upgraded pediatric environment.

Interactive Video Wall

Interactive Video Wall

Augmented Reality Application

Our team created a captivating video wall experience that immerses visitors in a series of dynamic interactive environments. Through a combination of volumetric augmented reality, sensor technology, and motion tracking, visitors can interact with on-screen activities presented on a curved video wall over 30’ wide and 8’ high.

The interactive video wall allows visitors to interact with a giant aquarium environment. As they approach the video wall, their presence is recognized and fish swim up and follow them. Visitors can “feed” the aquatic creatures by a simple hand gesture.   Another variation of the video wall program presents a life-size night scene of a lake, with a full moon, flickering campfire, and fireflies. Five different video wall themes offer both seasonal and holiday-based content. Ambient audio and sound effects enhance each of the immersive video experiences.

We produced all of the interactive video content so that children and their families can play games and even “dance” with onscreen characters. The experience gives patients and their families moments of joy and play during times that can be filled with anxiety and uncertainty.

Looping Video Projection

When the visitor arrives at the 10th floor of St. Vincent’s, they are welcomed by an entry kiosk. A motion sensor detects visitor presence and plays a video welcoming them to the Pediatric center. The welcome video includes animated animals/characters from the adjacent interactive video wall. Once the video plays, visitors are connected with a member of St. Vincent’s staff and welcomed into the Pediatric department.

The Idea

Help young patients and their families cope with the challenging realities of a pediatric hospital stay by creating an immersive video wall experience where visitors can play, dance, and interact with a series of animated natural environments.

Services

The Balance Team created a series of immersive video environments presented on the large, curved video wall. We designed and produced the graphics and animations for the video wall programs and developed a web-accessible content management system (CMS) that allows the hospital team to update and maintain their content through a secure, web-based, password protected application.

The Result

The hospital team is thrilled with the engaging environment that the video wall programming provides visitors to the pediatric unit. The experience offers young patients and their families moments of joy and respite from the day-to-day realities of a hospital visit.  In addition to providing kids a fun and entertaining distraction from their care and treatment at the hospital, the interactive video experience keeps patients moving and socializing with those around them, positively impacting their mental and physical health.
