PetSmart and Mall Augmented Reality Experiences

When it's showtime, it's crucial for a company to stand out. So when planning their booth for the 2018 NRF Retail Conference trade show, GES commissioned Balance to create two showstopping interactive experiences that featured the latest technology to do just that. The creative team developed two augmented reality experiences: The Mall Augmented Reality Experience and the PetSmart Augmented Reality Experience to offer customer engagement like no other.

Augmented Reality Application

The Mall Augmented Reality (AR) Experience activates without an image target using ARKit technology. Trade show attendees enter the JDA Software promenade and activate the iPad given to them by the GES booth staff. Upon activation, the exhibition hall promenade transforms into a mall of the future. Through the magical looking glass of the iPad, the mall covers the promenade--except curtain-shop windows. As they pan around the space, they see a stunning, one-story mall. Attendees can walk the expanse of the promenade walkway and experience the virtual mall laid out over the real furniture and booth spaces with JDA graphics showing through the virtual environments.  

To add to the experience, attendees choose from four personas: a customer, category manager, supply chain manager, or logistics manager and can hunt for 3D balloons along their shopping journey. When the user taps the icons, the balloons provide information about the JDA supply chain services.

The Balance team created an interactive experience where, when an iPad is pointed over physical shelves in the trade show booth, virtual shelves of a PetSmart store appear to showcase the pet industry leader's offerings. In the experience, there are bubbles that can be tapped to learn more about different inventory problems that client-partner, JDA, can help solve with the products and services they offer to aid in supply chain management for retailers. But what got the most attention, was the virtual, four-legged companion the team created–a 3D photo-real golden retriever. Bring a dog, virtual or otherwise, and everyone's tails start wagging. The pawsitive response was fun for everyone and many show attendees requested a picture with the virtual playful pup.
